STATEMENT OF WORK
I am drawn to subject matter that is often considered ordinary, uninteresting, or insignificant. My work focuses on the exploration of found objects, mechanical devices, and typography. Many of these subjects exhibit evidence of a past that indicates the possibility of heavy use, human and environmental interaction, or years of neglect. I want to visually engage the viewer to take a closer look, to see the subject’s unique qualities, to contemplate its history, and to feel the emotion and life in that which is generally overlooked, unnoticed, or discarded.
Simplification of form is an important aspect of my work. My approach is to take a subject and reduce it to a flat and minimalistic composition. Although the work begins as a series of simple shapes, I implement both indirect and direct painting methods to create multiple layers that range from thin transparent glazes to thick passages of opaque paint. This creates in my work a visual sense of pictorial space that both advances from and recedes into the painting.
My methodology focuses on the physical process of painting, the depiction and interpretation of form, and finding a balance between abstraction and realism. I have to cohesively resolve these problems before the work can exist as a finished piece.
